- THE SERVICE OF COMMEMORATION -
HOLYROOD CHURCH
HIGH STREET
SOUTHAMPTON

12-00 to 12-55

This Service was open to the public and commemorated those who lost their lives in a tragic event 96 years ago.

546 people were from Southampton, mostly crew members, drowned that night.

There were readings, hymns and a weath-laying ceremony

It was a morning of squally showers, unlike 2007 when we couldn't breath for the heat. We were pleased to be at the church in 2008 instead of standing in the park.
100 people turned up for the service. In his address the sheriff Councillor Brian Parnell said the sinking of the Titanic was a stark reminder of the dangers inherent to all those who plied their trade at sea. Many of the safety measures now in place came about as a direct result of the tragedy.....

The Reverend Sarah Chapman, the Mayors Chaplain, conducted the service.

Captain Phillip Holliday, Southamptons Harbour Master and Genevieve Bailey the Titanic historian read the lessons in the 20 minute service. The final hymn was "For those in peril on the sea"....

Wreaths were laid by the Police, Coast Guard, VT Shipbuilding, the BTS (who are in Liverpool again) and one came from a new quarter, our Southampton Titanic Group laid by Lucy Dhillon.

Lucy Dhillon lays the wreath on our behalf.
